Can You be Successful if You’re Not a “Mommy Blog”?

This is not a Mommy blog, I have no children or pets in my home, but I do have a handsome, loving husband. I’m not a mom yet, but I want to be, hopefully soon. So where does that leave me? How do I fit into the social, blogging, online world? What do I have to offer other women? Can I really teach someone something and will they even listen to me if I’m not a Mom and don’t have all those life experiences? You may have asked yourself those questions too, and if so, this post is for you!

Maybe you’re not a mom either, or maybe you’re not married, or maybe you’re a grandmother, or maybe you’re not even out of college yet. But no matter who you are, or what stage of life you are in– I know you can offer a perspective to the world that no one else can.

I truly believe that! I’ve started writing a little on Medium too. Sometimes I publish different types of articles than I post here on my blog, but sometimes the same. Medium is an especially good testing ground for writing. Generally if there’s a topic I’m not sure if there’s very much interest it, I’ll test there first.

I have been incredibly inspired as of late, by people of all walks of life. And I especially love posts that are very personal and transparent. Those are the ones that touch me. So I know the things that have happened in your life can be just as inspirational if you let them. If you share them.

Beginning to write again has slowly been helping me figure out how I can help others. Some days I feel like there’s a lot I can share, and some days there’s not.

But my goal with this post, is that I really want to help you see you can help others too!

You don’t have to let fear that you might not be the “typical” blogger keep you from sharing your ideas, suggestions, and experiences with the world.

Maybe you’re not a “writer”, but that doesn’t matter! You can get better at over time and always work on that part of it.

Can You or I Help Others?

Mommy blogs are popular because so many people can relate to them. People are looking for answers about how to be a better mom, or have a clean and organized home, or save money, become healthier, or improving their overall happiness.

So when I was thinking about starting a blog and trying to determine what it would be about, I really did wonder if I could still be successful if I wasn’t in the mommy club.

One of my worries was that I wouldn’t be able to help anyone, or inspire or provide value to other people, especially moms.

Even though I’m not one, I was the oldest of four kids. I was also six years older than the next kid, my brother. I spent a lot of time from the ages of 12-18 being motherly to my three younger siblings. My parents had divorced and my single mom worked full-time while going to school full-time as well. (There’s another idea for a blog post! “How to help your kids after a divorce”)

I know that’s not the same as actually being a mom. But I’m just illustrating how you can take lessons you’ve learned from any part of your life. You can make your experiences useful to someone else.

And the more I write and the more I read about other inspiring women, whether they are moms or not, the more I’ve realized there’s an unlimited amount of topics that people need help with. And the longer my list of ideas gets, the more I see that I can potentially help others with.

One of the best pieces of advice I’ve received so far, since starting with all of this, is that there’s room for everyone online. Everyone is talking about similar ideas- maybe there aren’t even new topics to discuss anymore?

But you’ll see over time, you’ll be able to capture a specific audience that’s meant for you, and they will find what you have to say and the way you say it, to be just what they need.

Topics, Topics, Topics

I think this is one thing almost all, if not all, new bloggers have issues with. Figuring out what it is you’re good at, or one thing you know or talent or experience you’ve had, that you’ll be able to uniquely share with the world—AND how it will make an impact or influence someone else for the good.

Does someone who has a mommy blog have it a little easier since their children add a whole other level of complexity to their lives? I’m sure they do!

But let’s be honest, we read blogs because we want to learn something. We read because we want to find an answer to a problem we have, or find a better way to do something in our lives. (Like when I discovered Marie Kondo’s cleaning method!) And even if you’re not a mom, you have so many things you can share with the world.

I knew I wanted to write about goals, why we make them, and how to actually get them to come to fruition. Probably because achieving goals has been something that I’ve struggled with throughout my life until recently, as I’ve finally been able to harness and accomplish many.

Also, my experiences running an Etsy shop for over 8 years has also been a fantastic experience for me, and has earned me several thousand dollars each year in “extra” money, so I thought I could also write about that too.

I really want to help inspire other women who might be thinking about selling their own handmade products online- because I know ya’ll are secretly super talented out there!

So yes, I’m still finding my way around but I’m feeling good that I know about some things I think could potentially help you. And if I provide even one solution or idea for you that improves your life in some way, then I’ll be super happy.

Key to Success

Another thing that I have found to be helpful so far, as I work to build up an online business, is try to remain humble.

People can tell if you’re being real or not. They can also tell if you’re only out for yourself- it can become very apparent.

The people I admire most in life are the most humble too- no matter how rich and successful they are, or aren’t. When you’re humble, you’re also teachable, which means you are open to learning. So you definitely want to be humble if you’re starting out in creating a business, it’s key.

Even the greatest bloggers (even those with a Mommy Blog) out there will tell you that you have to keep learning. They will profess that they still don’t know everything either. And if they do say that, they’re lying.

Everyone can always become better- always. Perfection is not attainable in this life. We can keep attempting to reach it, but it’s also healthy to realize you probably won’t ever attain it. And that’s okay, the point is to just keep trying.

Quiz Your Readiness

If you think you’re ready to start a blog, or maybe even more, like start your own business- ask yourself these questions to find out:

  1. Do I have a passion for something that I can teach to help others?
  2. Can I commit to continuing to develop content about this topic for years and years to come?
  3. Am I ready to learn and do I understand that it’s going to take time to figure it all out?
  4. Am I prepared to up my own reading and writing game?
  5. Do I have another blogger that inspires me, or a mentor who can help me along the way?

If you could answer yes to all 5 questions, you might just be ready to go for it! If you answered no to any question, you might want to continue working on your personal development. When you can answer all as Yes, you might be ready!

Conclusion

I’m definitely not perfect, oh-so-not-even-close! But I have lived, loved, failed, succeeded, fallen down, gotten back up, lost hope and found it again. And I’m sure that cycle will continue throughout my life.

And yes, I don’t have a “Mommy blog”, and maybe I never will be (but I hope I will). I’m just hoping that by at least reading and interacting with so many mom bloggers, maybe I’ll learn a thing or two about being a mom!

And in the meantime, I can just be a plain ol’ lady boss blogger who shares stories and lessons I’ve learned in life so far. With a hope that I might be able to inspire someone else to go for their goals and dreams too. Maybe even you!
